SEPTEMBER

Hello!

It doesn’t quite seem right that the September edition of the newsletter should be coming out already! I think this means that Summer is finally coming to an end. I don’t know about you, but I’m quite excited about donning my bobble hats for the crisp mornings and getting back to breakfasts of porridge. Autumn is definitely one of my favourite seasons for eating, the hearty root vegetables start to creep in and the hedgerows are still looking glorious - see this months recipe for rosehip syrup! Damsons are in season this month and this month only. So grab some if you can and made a delicious jam with them!

Plum and Apple Crumble with Marzipan

This crumble feels like the perfect September pudding. As the nights start to draw in a little earlier and it feels like pulling on your most beloved jumper is your new favourite Sunday night activity, all you’ll want to do is be eating this dessert with a generous glug of double cream and a glass of red wine in hand. With both apples and plums coming in to season this month, it’s an autumnal winner - the marzipan is just the thing to bring them both together.

Ingredients:

150g plain flour
100g fridge cold unsalted butter, cubed
50g granulated sugar
Pinch of salt
3 plums (roughly 400g)
2 apples (roughly 200g)
100g marzipan

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C and grease a 20cm pie dish.

  2. In a bowl, rub the butter into the flour using fingertips until they resemble a fine, breadcrumb like texture. Mix through the sugar and a pinch of salt and set aside.

  3. Peel the apples and chop them, along with the plums, into rough 2cm chunks. Toss the fruit together in the pie dish.

  4. Dot small pieces of marzipan into any gaps in the fruit, then layer the crumble on top.

  5. Cook for 30 minutes, don’t be tempted to take it out any earlier, you want the crumble to have crisped up and the juices of the fruit to start bubbling around the edges.

Rosehip Syrup

I really look forward to this time of year, mostly due to the abundance of delights on the hedgerows. Rosehip syrup is one of my favourite things to make, it’s great on pancakes, porridge and yoghurt, just to name a few. They’re best to pick during September and October. Find the recipe here.

Here are some of my favourite Instagrams from the last month. Charlotte’s absolutely beautiful strawberry and raspberry tarts. The ultimate Italian Birthday celebration thrown by Laura Jackson, it makes me wish Summer would never end! Popham’s dreamy looking breakfast setup…that pain au chocolat!
